Is it normal for a horse to have clear nasal discharge?
We just got our first horse a 20 month quarter horse mare and I would like to know if clear nasal discharge is normal? And what kind of food is the best? She is on sweet feed, hay, and grass. Will she need vitamins to go with her food? Does she need another horse for company? Or wll she be ok alone? I spend alot of time with her and don’t know if its fesable to take care of 2.
The discharge is not necessarily a bad thing. Some discharge every once in a while is ok. Horses get runny noses like humans, but if this discharge is always there and there seems to be a lot of it then your horse may have a virus. If you think that there is a lot of it, then a vet needs to be called out to properly diagnose your horse.
Your horse seems to be getting a good amount of food. The vitamins seem to be there. No other supplement is needed although you can provide a mineral block and/or salt block for your horse. It is not necessary, but you can add it into their diet. If you do do this, then make sure they have plenty of fresh water dialy.
No horse NEEDS to have another horse with them. They tend to get herd sour when they get with another horse and then they are took away from their pasture mate. All of mine are in different pastures and they are completely fine. I have never had a problem with them being alone. Your horse will be ok without a pasture mate.
