Horse Feed Past It’s Expiration Date, Safe to Feed?

I recently purchased a bag of mare and foal horse feed from a feed store I have bought from for years. When I feed my horses later on I noticed the feed was more powdery then usual. I checked the bag and discovered it was months past its expiration date, which was neatly hidden under the seal I had removed to open the bag.

Take it back to the feed store and ask them to replace it or refund your money. Expiration dates are for a reason. If it was so old that the feed had changed consistency I wouldn’t have fed it either- better safe than sorry or paying a big vet bill. I think you did the right thing.

And as far as problems, bad feed can cause nasty colic.
