What do I feed My Hens on ?
They are varying ages and sizes.I have tried Millet,veg,soaked bread,barley and oats. Is sand okay to use as grit or should I choose another type ?
I had always planned to have hens,but they came when I was unprepared for them, they urgently needed homes so I had to try to sort things out quickly.They seem to be okay now,they were sent out to early and have had a few problems.I am going to the Poultry feed suppliers today.Thanks for the continued support. folks I appreciate it.
Your hens need layers pellets or layers mash as a primary feed so that they get all the nutrients they need. You can buy this ready-mixed from a feed store such as Countrywide or Scats (UK), or TSC, Rural King or Agway (USA).
However, if they are under 8 weeks old, they need chick starter. Between 8 and 20 weeks of age, they need growers pellets. Both are available from the shops above.
As for grit, they will pick up insoluable grit themselves if they freerange. However, if they don’t free range then you will have to buy it from a pet shop or one of the shops listed above. It’s often labelled as either insoluable grit or pigeon grit.
They also need soluable grit, also known as oyster shell. This is for calcium, to help them form the shells on their eggs. If you can’t find any oyster shell, then save the egg shells, wash them out, crush them up and put them in a dish for them to take it as they need it. Make sure it doesn’t look like eggs though, or it can lead to egg-eating.
