Bit vs. Hackamore?
Recently rescued a beautiful 10yr old thoroughbred. Well trained and sweet but tosses at the bit constantly. Previous owners used a bit and that is what I “test rode” him it. Had him 4 weeks now and won’t stop tossing his head if bit reined. Neck reins and responds to foot commands but any touch on the bit (stopping, backing) causes him to toss and get a little pissy with us. Thought about a hackamore…any thoughts on this?
a hackamore wont help with the head tossing. i ride my horse in one sometimes and she is well behaved but sometimes harder to control. try changing the bit they are in, because some bits are meant to get a horses head up. we had this problem without even knowing. snaffles are good relaxed bits that dont bother horses generally, and that also helped to get my horses head down. if you horse is able to be ridden pretty easily in a halter you could switch to a hackamore. if that is harder they also make special more controlling hackamores.
