I use a short shanked mechanical hackamore. People say these are bad but I’m never given a reason why.?
Can anyone tell me why they are so bad. I was under the impression that if I was using it lightly it was one of the easiest things I could use on her besides a bitless bridle. Again, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
What I really want to know is exactly how does a hackamore work? What does it do to the horse?
The severity depends upon WHAT is in the noseband, first of all. I have an old QUICK mechanical hackamore that’s just leather for the noseband, no rope or cable and my old Azteca who can nolonger use a bit (He has melanomas on both sides of his mouth) and he LOVES it!
Mechanical Hackamores work on the principle of pressure. When you pull back on the reins, first it applies pressure through the crownpiece of the headstall, then clamps down on the bridge of the horse’s nose and applies pressure under the jaw. With HEAVY hands and a chain or nylon rope noseband, you can do some serious damaged I’ve been told, but I’ve NEVER seen anybody who used them do it to their horses.
