Does anyone have any good leading exercises?
I havent been able to ride my horse because of his nose, and now that he is better, i want to ease him into it. I thought it might be great to regain his groundwork with me. Any good ideas of how to improve his leading, ( he needs lots of work for his 20 YO self LOL)
a long dressage whip held in your left hand is good for supporting forward walks. a little tap on his side will keep him focused and forward. dont let him graze at all when you are working in hand. can he ground drive? this is really fun!!! i bought a young tb mare once that needed alot of excerisize. the barn i was managing had nothing but lusitano stallions and there was NO turn out. so evry day at lunch i worked with her on the ground driving, and am guessing she had been started like this anyhow, for steering, as is the habit of many tb breaking and training centers. we built up to jogging through the woods about 30 minutes a day, and we both got really fit. that horse would just go and go, ground driving and she never spooked at anything. it was alot of fun and i dont think it would be hard for you to teach your horse how to do it. it beats hand leading which can get realllllllllllly boring!
