Is it normal to be more comfortable riding a spooky horse than doing ground work with a spooky horse?
I was at the barn today and really realized how much I need to work on my trust with horses on the ground. I was trying out a horse today who is a huge 17.2 warmblood, he was at the barn for the first time on a 3 day trial and was jumping and spooking all over the place,no problem when I was on his back, he bucked a couple times and I was like “no problem” but I feel so intimidated on the ground I was terrified that he’s step on my foot he kept pacing back and forth and pawing the ground, I admit I was extremely uncomfortable.
(i had a bad experience with a horse stepping on my foot and me taking 30 seconds to get him to lift his hoof)
Anyone else feel the same way?
I used to be that way. I was more comfortable working with Tango in the saddle then the ground. That has nothing to do with getting my foot stepped on, though. I always wear good cowboy boots the protects my toes, so I’ve never had anything broken. =) I was more scared of getting my faced kicked in by Tango’s rearing up at me, but with a trainer I am getting him over that, and I am just as comfortable on the ground as in the saddle.
