Opinions on grooming supplies for show season?
For a palomino horse.
I need a cheap set of clippers (only for bridle path, face, ears, and fetlocks), detangler that actually works well, and an affordable sheet to keep him clean between when I groom him and when we arrive to the show grounds. Any opinions on any of these things are appreciated.
Also, what are your opinions on tails? Braided down the tail bone or pulled? Natural or cut square at the end? For dressage shows and possibly very low level EQ flat classes.
I bought a tiny hand held set of clippers for about $50, theres no need to go the big electric set just for faces. Mine run on batteries and fit in your pocket, way easier than the chunky ones for faces. Fetlocks might challenge them though.
For a detangler I use Champion Tails water glaze. Im superstitious about Champion Tails – I use it at every show and whenever I dont, I dont get a ribbon.
I used a sheet for maybe my first 2 shows, they end up doing more harm than good and smudge a nice short coat. Only use the sheet if its raining, otherwise have a soft cloth and brush on hand – I take a little bag to the ring with my water glaze, cloth and brush in it – and mop up any spots right before they go in.
I like a tail braided but it really depends on the horse. If theres not much there to braid and you KNOW you cant get it looking neat, shave it. If its nice and long and you can get a great, neat braid, then do a braid. Judges love a good braid. For dressage and flat classes they usually prefer cut tail, nice and straight. Natural looks untidy on a horse all done up.
