Gentle Horse Training

have you ever adopted a BLM mustang?

if you have please answer with some tips for gentling and training. i have trained horses, but i just got my first mustang she is one years old and has had no human interaction at all, she was captured from the wild. so please if you have some tips for bringing her trailer ride(its going to be a long one) or any other tips about when i first get her home, and when i gentle and train her please answer!

I once adopted a 6 month old filly that had been rounded up only 6 weeks before and had been trailered into Pa with a tractor trailer load of mustangs coming in for adoption. When you get there you will need a halter and a lead line… you will give it to them when it is your turn, they will tell you to back your trailer against their shoot, they run the horse into their shoot, lean over from above and oput the halter with the lead line attached on the horse then run it into your trailer, shut the door then you are on your own. When you get home make sure you can back tight against your barn, my filly was tiny and 4 grown men could barely hold onto her to get her 10 feet into the barn. I put her into a big box stall with sides and front that go all the way up so they cant climb over because they will try. DONT take the lead line off! put her into the stall with hay and water, turn the lights out and leave, she will need to rest after a full day of excitement. come back in the morning and give more hay, fresh water, dont try to grab at her. I would just put a chair in the stall doorway and sit for an hour a few times a day and talk to her for the first week. Every time I opened the door she would put her head into the back corner and her butt towards me and would kick like a mule if you tried to get near her head. This is where the lead line comes in handy.. after she relaxed with me by the door (but still with head in the corner) I would slowly reach in with a stick that had a hook on it (like the ones kids show steers with) and hook the leadline and pull it to me. after I had the line I will pull to turn her head towards me and then when she had to turn to face me get right up tight to her head,I worked my way to petting and talking to her… each time moving a little more over her body and down her legs and belly…she never could figure out how I was getting a hold of that line! LOL… after 2 weeks of handling her like this she was no different than any baby.. you just had to handle her slow. within 2 weeks she would pick up her feet well enough to have them trimmed for the first time. She was very very smart. she learned to lead within the first 3 weeks. I didnt have any other horses at that time only my sons show steer so she buddied up with him and was no different than any young horse. DONT turn them out until you have worked with her for 2 weeks (BLM tells you that you cant keep them in a stall but dont listen) Be careful because if they cant run they will kick and fight and boy that little girl could kick hard when she first came and was scared but alot of time just sitting by her stall and talking to her will help. Also the lead line left on helps to train them to stop when pulled on because she will step on the line in her stall which will in turn pull on her halter as you would do if asking her to stop… I learned this from my son, that is how you first train show steers… Cut the line so that when her head is at a normal level only about 4 or 5 inches will touch the ground, not enough to get her tangled in and get into trouble. I think I left that line on her full time for the fist month, dont take it off until you can approch her head and snap a oline on her…. I think you are smart getting a young one, I saw people that had never had a horse before adopting 3 and 4 year olds because they wanted to start riding them as soon as possible.. it is alot easier to deal with a baby than a full grown 1000 lb horse that is scared to death. I ended up selling her as a 2 year old because I wanted to get back into showing AQHA, but she was a trail horse at a local hack stable and was one of the best horses they had, she was no trouble to break because she had a year and a half to just be handled lead and learning to longe… BLM does not give the best advice… one lady I spoke with on the phone told me that these horses had no bad habits because a horse learns bad habits from humans… what a dumb thing to say!!!! the 2 worst and most dangerous habits a horse can have is biting and kicking and they learn that from momma from day one when in a herd…. so be careful with the back end and hold close to the halter on the front end to control the biting until you get their trust.
Good luck, be careful but you will be amazed if you spend alot of time with them just hanging out how fast they will learn you are ok and you are the one that brings them food and rubs them all over… Take it slow
