Sore Back Saddle Pad help?
My new horse has been having a few issues under saddle since I got him. I decided to have him checked out and yesterday the therapist said he did have muscle pain along his back (his spine etc are currently unaffected). We are giving him some time off and working on a massage and stretching programme.
My new saddle has been declared a really good fit and we think this pain was caused by a previously ill fitting saddle from before I got him. However, the therapist did suggest that a good saddle pad could help him be more comfortable. I have always ridden in just a plain dressage pad. I started to look and am overwhelmed by the array of gel, memory foam, sheep skin, full pads, half pads, wither pads etc that I just don’t know where to start!!
The pain is right at the back where the cantle sits and my horse has normal withers and is quite wide.
Please could you share your preferences and why you chose it….any links would be great!!
If it’s in the cantle area and you are correct about him being ridden in an ill fitting saddle before than it’s likely they used a front riser pad with the ill fitting saddle that caused it to tip back and put lots of pressure in the cantle area.
For saddle pads go for a saddle pad that is a shaped pad. I do not advocate half pads. These don’t extend all the way down the panels and when you sit on the saddle the part of the panel that doesn’t have the half pad under it is going to bend and create a pressure point.
So get a shaped pad. These extend all the way down the panels and create no pressure points.
Go for:
Open cell foam
Gel
Memory foam
Pads with a hard outer shell and soft core
Sheepskin, fleece etc etc
Avoid:
Liquid gel
Closed cell foam
Air filled
Leather
The ones I said are okay will absorb any little pressure points.
The ones I said to avoid don’t do this. The liquid gel spreads out around pressure points. The closed cell foam and air filled gets tight under pressure and may actually create a pressure point. The leather is too stiff to absorb any pressure points will just make the existing pressure point larger.
I love Grand Prix, Fleeceworks and Millers. If possible get a shaped pad with a gullet (meaning it’s thinner in the gullet area) so there isn’t added bulk in that area that is pushing down on the spine.
Avoid wither relief pads. The press down on the sides of the withers.
