Center fire or standard rigging for a gaited trail saddle?
Hi guys,
I am going to purchase a saddle from National Bridle Shop called the Tennessean Endurance. Already tried a friends model and it fits my TWH great
I have 2 options, standard rigging or center fire rigging. I do some rough riding in the mountains and sand dunes, sometimes 6-8 hour rides. I have only ever used standard rigging, never had girth sores, I am very diligent about my horse’s care & tack. Am I missing out with the center fire? Looking for those with experience. Have you heard or experienced good/bad either way? I know you need a wider girth, is that a pain?
Thanks!!
I’ve used both. I assume you can either go with one that accommodates center fire rigging, or you can get a standard one that has rear dees and uses a rear cinch. Either one will work to keep the saddle from coming forward onto the withers and off of the back when you do hill work. The only reason to go with center fire rigging is if you don’t want to use two girths, or you want more elbow room for your horse and less bulk under your legs. If you decide go with a saddle that has a rear girth, then be sure to use a connector between the front and rear cinches to prevent the rear cinch from displacing backward. For average trail riding a 7/8 rigging with a flank cinch is fine. With the amount and type of riding you plan to do, especially being in the mountains, I think the center fire rigging would be better for both you and the horse. You might also want to invest in a crupper if the hill work is steep.
