What should I be feeding my horse?
I have an 18 month old American quarter horse who just now is on unlimited supply of hay all day every day. I want to train him to ride and show jump and want him to be strong. he is currently standing around 15hh and would like to see him grow more. what food and supplements should i be feeding him?
Yes, some grain would be good, and so would exercise. Get him out on a pony rope, and take him with you trail riding. Start him round penning, trotting and loping over poles, and free jumping (not high, just enough to get his feet off the ground and he can learn to start judging heights, distances and so on.)
Toss a light saddle on him and start getting him used to that – and I’m serious about taking him with you when you go riding. The more long trotting you can do with him now on a leadrope, (especially up hill) the better strength he’ll have in his back and haunches later. He’ll also learn to breath and how to travel at an even gait. And you won’t have the wear and tear on his joints that going in endless circles causes.
