Thinking about starting lessons in English riding, lots of questions..?
So.. I’ve been riding western for seven years or so and figured I’d give english a shot and see if I like it better but I had a few questions for other riders.
Anyone transition from western to english and like english more?
I’m a size 34 waist 21 inch thighs, are the breeches unflatering to people not particularly slim?
Do you trim your legs fairly easily doing english, with the posting and all?
On the boots, I have a size 9 1/2 foot, 13 length, 16 width, what size boot is that?
What is the hardest part about riding english?
For those of who have done both western and english, is english or western easier/funner?

Breeches are unflattering on anyone who isn’t naturally rail thin, but you shouldn’t worry. You’ll want a pair to stop the leathers from pinching, as it can hurt depending on how bad they pinch you. I honestly know I don’t look attractive in breeches, but honestly they won’t be staring at them so much as your riding. I know many a person who isn’t tiny who wore them. Never thought twice about it because everyone had a pair. In a sea of tan things get lost!
I’m not sure about how trim your legs get. You’ll definitely build muscle more than anything else. Really how trim you get depends on you more than anything else. Some people do see their legs slim, others don’t see much a difference.
You get a 9 1/2 boot. Start with paddock boots for now, the kind that zips up.If you have a wide foot in shoes, see if you can find a boot made for a wider foot. Online shopping at stateline should help you get started.
Hardest part is the stamina, I think. I’d come cold off 2 semesters of not jumping and I’d pop right back into lessons. We’d get 10 minutes of posting, 10 without stirrups, and 10 more cantering before we got to jumping a course of any kind, so be prepared to huff and puff no matter who you are!
