Tips on english horseback riding?
Since the horse I usually tend to ride will be in another lesson, I’m riding a different one. (well, obviously..) Anyways, he’s the cutest thing in the world, but his canter is gigantic! If that makes sense. His leg goes kind of high. It doesn’t scare me or anything, it’s just a little bouncy and different then usual. Any tips on how to sit his canter out a bit more comfortably? The only reason I’ve ever fallen off of him was because he got spooked by a truck, and he reminds me of a gigantic 16 hh flea bitten puppy. (:
If it helps, we use close-contact saddles. ^^
Relax your lower back and let your legs hang like heavy wet towels, with your weight sinking down into your heels. If you stiffen your back against his movement and/or grip with your knees, you will come upwards out of the saddle. (Think about the physics of this.)
If you feel very unsteady and as though you might fall off, just drop one hand to the pommel to balance yourself, and quietly come back to trot.
If you try and balance yourself on the reins this will be painful for his mouth and he will hollow against you. If in an emergency you cling on tight with your legs, he will think you are squeezing him forward, so remember about dropping one hand to the pommel instead!
It’s great to ride more than one horse and you’re finding out first hand how much the paces of individuals vary. You’ll feel really pleased when you are more relaxed in this different horse’s canter and realise that you are making progress as a rider too!
