Tips For Teaching A Draft To Drive Wanted!!?
I am only 15 years old now and my father got me a 2yr spotted draft mare when i was 13. Since then I tought her how to ride western. Now nearly 2 years later she is 4 and I want to start a new project with her. I need tips for driving bad. I have no clue. I am a beginner when it comes to this! I also have no other horses to help out with the training. No neighbors with horses trained for driving either.
I did all of the -basic- ground work…..
To put it simply, you want to start with ground driving. First of all, your horse needs to know vocal cues such as walk on and whoa. She also needs to know how to direct rein.
You want to put a surcingle on her (or a harness) and put a lungeline/20ft + rope through an upper loop on each side, and attach the clips to her bit. Then tell her to walk on, and steer her direct reining, pull to stop. If she has a big stride, you may have to run a bit to keep up.
Once she walks, backs, and stops well with direct rein and cues with you behind her, then try trotting with you following behind, holding the lunge lines.
Once she ground drives well, you hook her up to a cart with a harness and work from there, using the same cues as ground driving- the basics are actually really easy.
