What defines a farm legally?
So I have been researching starting a dairy farm for the past year. I’ve got a pretty good idea about how thing will go and I’m to the point of starting to buy equipment and animals. At what point do I go froma guy with pets and big lawn mowers to a farmer? Is there a legal definition fomr USDA, IRS. Is it jsut as simple as opening a bank account that says farm, or do I need like a business liscence?

Thanks for all the answers. Just to clarify.. I am in Illinois. My grandpa is a retired dairy farmer and my uncles rent a few hundred acres from him from grain. The dairy has been sold and I would like to get it going again. I talked with them and it was a little confusing because my grandpa owns the ground but my uncles farm it. So who’s the farmer? I guess they both are..

Depends on where you live. Here in Colorado we have a property tax definition determined in court that you can maintain a status as a farm if you harvest a crop, graze cattle, or lease pasture.
Get a schedule F from your tax guy and look at the categories of expenses for farming. You do not even have to have a separate bank account. You can just keep track of those expenses that are deductible. Beware that the list on schedule F are not the only ones you can deduct. If the expense is for the farm it is deductible.
