Question about riding in a Derby (cross country show jumper mix)?
What clothes are you supposed to wear? Do you need tall boots or can you wear paddock boots? Do you need a jacket or is a polo shirt or short sleeve show shirt acceptable? Are you allowed to wear half-chaps? Keep in mind this is for the lower levels (no higher that 3 feet jumps) at a local Georgia show at Big Bear Farm. Also does your horse have to have a braided mane? Because I was thinking of giving my horse a buzz cut to stay cool in the hot and humid Georgia Summers. Is there a specific color of pad needed?
I am asking about derby which is a combination of the two disciplines, with about 50% of the obstacles being solid and the other 50 being stadium type jumps that fall down. Not the individual disciplines.
If you want to see what a derby is you can find videos of it on youtube. Like I said before it is a combination of showjumping and cross country that is scored based off of time and number of faults.
I believe that you are supposed to be turned out as if for cross country. So, polo shirt/show shirt, body protector, breeches, medical armband. You can wear paddock boots and half chaps if they are the type that look like a regular boot when worn together (leather, not suede.) No specific pad color.
You do not have to braid for jumping phases in eventing. I would not recommend roaching the mane however. What would you hold on to in a pinch?
