What does it mean when a horse “roars”?
I saw an add for a hose for sale, but he was not qualified for high end competition because he, “roared” what does this mean exactly? And why is it looked down upon?

Roaring is considered an unsoundness in a competition horse, so trying to compete on one will get you disqualified. I had a horse with a mild roar when I was a teenager. Usually it was never an issue but I showed the AAA circuit and at one show we had one day where we were reserve champion of our hunter division, and the next day the judge disqualified us because he was roaring – the day before he wasn’t making any noise.
When the horse is working and breathing deeply, essentially there are two flaps on either side of the windpipe that lift and open to allow more air flow. A horse who roars has one or both sides paralyzed, the flaps do not lift, so he makes a wheezing noise.
Its looked down upon because its like clearing an asthmatic to run a marathon – even on a good day, there is a concern about how much air can be taken in as needed.
However, I opted for surgery with my roaring horse. They can either stitch, or scar, the passageway so that it is open all the time. It’s not cheap, but for a high level horse (he was insured at $75,000) its was a good investment. The only weird part is – at that time anyway – they don’t suture the incision shut. I had to clean it twice a day and because it was a “head wound” which heal very quickly, if memory serves it closed up in about 2 weeks.
So depending on the cost and what you want to do with him, it may not be very threatening, and it may even be worth getting taken care of. The best bet for a horse like this is to have the vet scope his windpipe when you do the pre–purchase exam. That should give you a good idea of the real situation
