chicken soup for sale?
My mom makes the best chicken soup if we wanted to sell it how would we go about doing that?

Paul Newman wrote a book about his salad dressing company, and how he got it off the ground. You’d probably benefit from reading it. It’s called ” Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good: The Madcap Business Adventure by the Truly Oddest Couple” by Paul Newman and A.E. We used to take beef to a local cannery because when you’re trying to process a whole side, using a pressure canner that holds 7 quarts per batch takes *forever*. Some of our neighbors took tomatoes, peaches, chickens, and so forth to the cannery.
Angela Alessio, an RN here in Lancaster sells spaghetti sauce. She’s been in business now for four or five years, I believe, and she appears to be doing well. She initially had a stand at a local farmer’s market, and when you walked past, she would offer you a small hunk of bread to dip in her sauce – and, of course, the opportunity to buy her sauce. The fact that she’s very personable and attractive probably helped. Still, at $4 for a quart, people don’t buy unless it tastes *very* good. Slowly, she’s gotten more and more stores to carry her sauce.
I wouldn’t call her an overnight success. She’s worked very hard. And while she appears to be a rather intelligent woman, this isn’t rocket science. You figure out your cost, and charge a higher figure. You sample your product where you can – and if it’s the best, as you say, people will buy it. What’s more, they will return to buy more, and they’ll tell their friends about it.
If you take a look at her site, you’ll notice that the stores that carry her sauce aren’t big chains. To get space on their shelves, you basically have to pay rent. While you’re getting started, that would be unprofitable, but at some point, your growth will be limited if you don’t get into the big chains.
If you think it’s going to be a snap, please don’t waste your effort and your money, because there is *definitely* a struggle involved getting started. You have to keep your eyes on the prize, and realize that your business isn’t about selling a can here and a can there, it’s about building a base of customers who regularly buy your product. If it costs $3 to acquire a customer who buys 2 cans a month, and you make 25c per can of soup, you lose money now – but you’ll double your $3 investment over the course of the next year.
