how much do your chickens cost you per year?

Also how many do you have, how much did it cost to build your chicken coop and run, how much do feeders and waterers cost?

I keep around 150 birds at the moment, and it is always changing. I go through probably three hundred pounds of food a month, averaging 12 dollars per sack (I get egg layer pullets, chick starter/grower, and scratch). So feed is $72 a month in feed.

My hens lay 2 dozen eggs a day all of which I sell for $3. So my hens make around $180 a month. In hard core winter I would get 1 dozen so that would be 90 dollars a month.

Of course I have been raising chickens for probably over 10 years, and I have my fence up, and my coops made. But, I am guessing my fence cost around $700 and the coops a couple hundred. So lets just say I spend $1,000 over time on supplies/coops/fencing. If I continue to make 106 a month than it would take me 9.4 months to pay it all back. It always takes a few years to come up ahead of your dept with livestock.

Feeders and waters are the least of your worries; they most likely will not go over ten bucks. If you want electric it could be a little pricier. What is going to cost you is the supplies for the coop and fencing, unless you plan on free ranging. I only use feeds/waters for chicks. Older birds drink out of small buckets, dog bowls, whatever I have to use. Food is tossed on the ground. I do have a main feeder for the free rangers so that food isn’t all over the place, and I keep it full constantly so that they can eat whenever they like.

As for the coop- the price of the coop depends on what you are making them. Some people make chicken palace and it costs them in the thousands. Think about how many birds you want to own and draw out a plan. Budget your money, and be creative. Chickens don’t have to be expensive animals, and they are supper nice pets/livestock to have.

Also keep in mind, that a lot of my left over money goes into getting new birds for my flock to improve the breeding, and to take the place of the ageing birds.

So if you are looking for a way to make some cash, chickens aren’t really the way to get it. However, it is a fun way to spend some of your time, and if done correctly it shouldn’t cost you to much.
