What Type of Chicken Feed do I use?
Soon I will be getting 9 baby chicks that will be used as laying hens. I am planning on buying medicated starter crumbles, but I’m not sure how much feed I should buy and how long I feed this feed to the chicks. After 6 weeks I think I’m supposed to switch to growing crumbles or something. Can someone tell me what types of feed to feed the chicks and for how long?
You start out with chick starter for the first ten weeks. Medicated, or not is your choice. After that move on to grower/finisher and sty on that till week eighteen, at this time they can start to eat adult feed.
It is much cheaper to buy chick food in the fifty pound bag, then in bags of five, and ten. I”m not sure about the bag of twenty, you could do the math if they offer it to you. It could very possibly work for you to buy a bag of food, feed them it till it is gone, and then move on to the next type. It wouldn’t hurt them if they ate it a week longer, or less.
Also, take a look at the bags in your feed store. They may say something different on them. I buy my feed at Agway, and they don’t offer grower, just starter/grower the birds eat until you put them on adult feed. My birds are still alive and well.
