WANTED: FREE OR CHEAP FERRETS+SUPPLIES(no cage needed)?
I have been looking for a ferret for a while, but I’m 15 and still need to go to my parents for money. So I would like it to be free but the most I can pay is $50 for everything(maybe) . I would love to have a male and female, doesnt matter is they are spayed. But my mom would like them to be descented(but it doesn’t matter to me). I would need EVERYTHING except the cage with it. I would give them a good home. I have a very large 5 ft tall 4 foot long two story cage that was previously used for chinchillas. I live in Huntington, West Virginia and My email is Alliel4327@aim.com and cell 304.521.9967 . If I don’t answer my cell PLEASE leave a message. Please let me know ASAP! (I would be able to get them in September because my parents won’t let me get them until my birthday, September 3.) I’m anxious to get these little guys:)
A ferret’s complete setup is usually around $500 without the cage. It should matter if they are spayed/neutered because a male that is left intact would hurt the female, plus a pregnant ferret is very difficult to care for.
If you can’t afford the animal, how are you going to afford veterinary bills? Ferrets need two vaccinations yearly, distemper and rabies. They should be on heartworm preventative at least in the warm months because it only takes one or two heartworms to kill a ferret. One mosquito bite is all it takes, in other words. In addition, around age three ferrets start to develop serious (and very expensive) illnesses. They are also prone to swallowing things they shouldn’t, which typically ends up in surgery.
Here’s a copy/paste of some info from another question I answered:
Don’t be selfish. It’s not about what YOU want, it’s about giving a ferret a good home. If you don’t know the answers to these questions already you don’t need one. I’ve researched French Bulldogs for two years and STILL don’t feel prepared to own one. I’m not trying to be mean, I’m trying to put the ferret first.
Things you’ll need:
-Food (2 types at least)
-Water bottle or dish (depending on which the ferret is used to)
-Feeder
-Cage
-Cage liners (for most cages, NO cedar chips!)
-Hammock
-Litter pan(s)
-nail clipper
-comb
-dry shampoo (no bathing in water)
-litter (NO clumping cat litter!)
-toys
-treats and/or vitamins
-extra things like: deterrent spray, harness/lead, flea prevention, etc.
Be prepared to spend about $500 for all of these items initially, including the price of the ferret itself.
To adopt a single ferret from a rescue, the price is usually $75 – 100, much cheaper than a pet store, actually. And it’s helping out an animal in need! For a pair it’s $150, and then usually $50 per ferret after that (three ferrets would be $200, for example). The only place you’ll find a free ferret is on craigslist or similar.
Ferrets have bad health as they get into old age, and often require surgeries to remove cancerous tumors, and these can cost up into the thousands. Some states also require distemper and rabies vaccinations. You’ll at least want the distemper. Both of these are usually $20 apiece, and they are both yearly.
Food is expensive because they require to be fed at least two types at a time. I feed four, myself. The two I would recommend are Evo for Ferrets (grain-free, best on the market) and Instinct for Cats Rabbit Formula, just because my ferrets love it and it’s holistic. Ferrets are strict carnivores and cannot live solely on a diet of cat or dog food. The Instinct is about $30-40 for a 12lbs bag, and the Evo is about $20-25 for a 6.6lbs bag.
Also, you’d need a bag of treats and/or vitamins, both are going to be about $5-10 per bag, and will probably last about a month. Never feed your pet raisins or any other kind of fruit, vegetable, bread, or human-type drink Remember, only meat! Always read ingredients. Ferrets really like a thing called FerreTone, and I recommend you’d get some. It’s about $10 per bottle.
A cage will probably be between $150 and $200. Absolutely NO wire flooring, this is bad for their feet and can cause severe injury. You’re better off just getting one of the more upscale ones with plastic flooring because you’ll be paying out more in vet bills when their feet are injured. The cage I use is the Ferret Nation 2 story. It’s usually roundabouts $180 – 200, but it’s top of the line. I don’t know what kind of cage you have, but if it has wire flooring, cover it with linoleum or towels or something. Make sure it’s big enough for two.
To go in the cage, you’ll want at least one water bottle. It needs to have a drip BALL, not the kind for a hamster or rodent, because ferrets lick and those will cut their tongues in half. Bad news. You’ll also want a LOCK ON feeder, I recommend a gravity bin feeder (a j-feeder), which you can find at a PetSmart. This is probably about $7-10. Ferrets need a constant supply of food unlike dogs or cats because they have a short digestive tract. Also, you need at least one litter box, but I keep one in their cage and two in the room where they’re kept. They have short attention spans and will use the bathroom in any corner they see. You’ll need a scooper, and litter for this, too. Remember: NO cat litter. Ferrets need special litter. I use Marshall Premium Ferret Litter and it’s great. You can get a 10lbs bag for about $10-12.
You’ll need toys, too. Nothing rubber because they could accidentally chew and swallow that, and it’ll kill them. They get bored easily, so toys need to be rotated, or you’ll have to buy new ones. For flea prevention you’ll want to talk to a vet about Revolution or whatever he recommends for your ferret. If you have a pull-out tray in the bottom of the cage, line it with cage liners or cat litter liners, but remember: no wood shavings or chips.
Phew. Ferrets are hard work
