I have to push my steer sometimes to get him to listen- What are some other methods?
I just got a steer last Tuesday. At first he was terrified, but now he’s calmed down.
He runs away alittle bit, but I can put the halter on him without much trouble. That could always get better though.
The biggest problem is teaching him to lead. I don’t know if it’s too soon to start, but he seems calm enough and my ag teacher advised starting now. Using the pull-release method, he takes a few steps but then I must push his shoulder, even if it’s in the wrong direction just to get him to listen to me. I’ve heard that cattle use pushing as a dominant suggestion, and I don’t want to keep doing this in the fear that he will start pushing me back. But I can’t physically continuously hold on to his halter rope (he’s heavy- I’m small!).
What do you think or suggest?
well maybe hes still getting used to the idea of having someone leading him my 2 year old market steer for fair is still like that someone would probly have to stand behind him to get him to walk i hope that helps
