Can you recommend a book about livestock?
I am researching a magazine article to sell to a publisher. Can you recommend a book, or a small group of books, that cover most aspects of raising, caring for, and selling/slaughtering livestock? I need to include as many types (different cattle breeds, different sheep breeds, alpacas, different chicken breeds) as possible. I also need to know about how much of the animal’s weight is meat and how much is waste, milk and egg outputs, wool outputs, etc. I need to know how much to feed and water. The publisher wants to know about Dexter cattle.
Cost of the books is important…I don’t want to spend $120 on books to write an article that will pay less than $150!

Well, there’s actually a number of those “Idiot’s Guide To…” books about agriculture. I know there is one about raising poultry, and I’d bet there’s probably others on other livestock. One of my favorite books about hoofstock is “Humane Livestock Handling” by Temple Grandin. It’s more focused on the design of slaughterhouses than the actual productivity of the animals, but it’s very fair and very informative.
And, if you are at all interested in using magazines as well, I’d very much recommend The Hoard’s Dairymen. If nothing else, it will give you lots of names to google to look for additional resources about cattle, as pretty much everyone that they interview or have as a guest writer is known for their knowledge about raising productive herds.
Finally, there’s the 4-H resource store here: http://www.4-hmall.org/Curriculum.aspx Now, some of that will be targeted to young kids, but I bet if you look through there you’ll find some good pamphlets with some nice stat lists about animal care and productivity.
