Handling two month old colt?
Does anyone have tips for the first hands on haltering session of a two month old colt of a bronc mare? She can’t be haltered and tied as she is wild. They will be in a cattle pen, not a stall. Thanks!
Very carefully. If you can, you may want to get someone who has experience in handling foals. If this is not an option for you, then you need to try and make friends with your foal. Most are naturally curious and will come and check out something new. The way I have always haltered my babies is not going at them from the front with the halter (due to limited eye site from that direction, but from the side. Stand next to the foal and let him look, sniff and even chew on the halter. Never try to just force it on him. Rub and scratch on him and make him think this is the greatest thing in the world. With enough time and patience, you will find that they will almost halter themselves. I also suggest getting a breakaway halter in case he panics. I would give the mare something to do (such as eating), since you mention that she cannot be haltered. Please use extra caution, since she may not react well to you being near her baby. You may also want to think about at least breaking her to lead and not be so wary of humans, since this in turn makes handling her foal easier.
