I’M USING A ELECTRIC CATTLE FENCE TO KEEP PEST OUT OF MY GARDEN. HOW STRONG IS 1000 VOLTS ON A PULSED
COMPAIRED TO MY GRANDPA’S OLD BATTERY SYSTEMS.
OK, here is how it works:
All that matters is current. Around 10mA (0.01Amps) is a substantially unpleasant tingle. Around 100mA can kill, but it depends on where the current flows.
By Ohm’s law, current is equal to voltage divided by resistance.
If you puncture your skin, it takes very little voltage to reach 10mA. But your skin and clothing, and in this case the fur of an animal, cause high resistance, so it takes a lot more voltage to cause around 10mA to flow.
An electric fence circuit has built-in current limiting, so even if you short it out, currents aren’t supposed to reach dangerous limits. Your grandpa’s old battery system used some kind of electronics, probably a buzzer type step up system, to generate high voltage, and most likely used thin wire with high resistance to limit the current.
You must -never-, I repeat NEVER wire your home outlet directly to an electric fence. Fifteen amps before the breaker blows, and that can generate fires from leakage through plants touching it or wet wood (rain on fenceposts), and can kill a person or pet in seconds.
