What is the best food for my 5 month old german shepard?
HI: We have had our german shepard for two weeks now, the humane society was feeding her purina one puppy or something like that. She didn’t eat any of that the first few days we had her. We got Canidae all life stages. She will eat it but doesn’t seem to care for it, we have to temp her to eat it. (We have tried the whole thing where we leave it out for 15mins and eventually she will get hungry, she didn’t) The trial thing of canidae is gone and we are going to chuck and don’s tomorrow but not sure what to get since she didn’t like the canidae but we want to feed her a good quality food for a german shepard/ australian cattle dog mix. I would also like to add that the vet gave us a sample bag of iams healthydog or something like that and she loved it, she scarfed it down so fast. is iams for dogs like mcdonald’s for people? lol. Anyway is there something that we can get her that she might like taste wise more than canidae but is just as good for her! Thanks!

Avoid foods with corn, wheat, or soy as these are hard for dogs to digest and contain no nutritional value. They are used as a cheap filler in low quality foods like Iams, Puriana, Hills Science Diet and Royal Canin. Look for a food with no by-products that lists a meat as the first ingredient.
Vets will recommend a low quality food either because they get a kickback from the sales of that food or because they don’t know any better. Most vets aren’t given much education on pet nutrition. Vets, like us, are led to believe that anything sold as dog food is nutritionally balanced and that we should place our blind faith in dog food companies.
