What kind of fencing for your horses works for you?
I am such a worry wart when it comes to fencing. I get stressed out with the littlest of things. I know that with some things you just can’t help it, like with nails sticking out or a piece os wire comes undone and needs to be fixed. It just happens. My question is, what kind of fencing do you the posters use? I’ve seen twine, PVC pipes, pieces of shed, cattle panels, chicken wire, plastic, wood, barb wire, electric, wood everything. I recently saw a fence that had T-posts, one wire of electric fencing and the other two were plane wire with pvc pipe over as a visual. Has anyone done this before? What kind of fencing works best for you?
When I fenced my property I did quite a bit of research into safety and durability of fencing first. I ultimately decided on using heavy gauge diamond horsewire no climb mesh attached to wood posts and with a wood top rail. I ran my posts with 5 1/2 inch diameter posts every 100 feet, and 4 1/2 inch diameter posts approximately every 7 feet in between. Corners and gates are all reinforced with double posts. I decided on the wood top rail as opposed to adding electric at the top because of the many gates I installed, and the pain it would be to wire my pastures with that many gates. I also have trees all along the outside of the fenceline and downed branches (even tiny ones) could be a problem with shorting out electric wire. I set all my posts in concrete below the freeze line, and angled (sawed) the top of each post to drain water off the posts and prevent rotting. This was years ago, and my fences have required nothing in the way of maintenance. I do inspect them regularly, and even when storms have downed large tree branches the fence has held up to it. I put in more than enough gates and used only heavy duty pipe rail gates made for horses. I strongly advise you to do the same if you are building a fence, since it is hard to add gates later on. I have more gates than I really need, but I use every one of them for reasons of convenience.
Anyway, this fencing is safe and resilient and I’ve had no problems or maintenance issues with it since the day it was installed years ago. A horse will bounce off of it if he hits it hard, and he can’t get a hoof through the wire mesh. I’ve had no injuries with this fencing.
Add…..at the front of the pastures only, I have three board rails added to the outsides of the posts (the wire is attached to the insides of the posts) which is aesthetically pleasing.
