Help catching the horse I ride when she’s in her field?
I exercise a mustang x mare about once a week. She used to be ok to catch, but has become increasingly difficult. A couple of weeks ago I couldn’t catch her at all and ended up spending 2 hours chasing her around the field. I have to drive about an hour to get out there and although I would like to be able to spend more time with her, I can’t afford to keep going out there if I can’t ride. Last time I went out, I didn’t even try to ride, I just spent some time with her and gave her some snacks.
Her owner says she is fine to catch usually, and she has done some natural horsemanship with her. She lives in a 10 acre field with about 10 other horses, who are all really friendly. Please can someone give me some help, as I really enjoy our time together. I’ve tried hiding the halter, but I don’t want to trick her and she can’t be bribed with food.
She must be realizing that you coming to see her equals riding. Either she’s sore or something (I might get her checked out with you) or she doesn’t like to be ridden (or she doesn’t like you?). Come give her treats. If you only have time to come out to ride her than you don’t have time for her at all. Mustangs are very smart and most of the time stubborn. Come out with her a give her treats. This is not tricking her, this is showing her you love her for more than just riding her. In between riding sessions come out and just give her love. If this means riding her less, so be it.
