i want to buy a horse and need some questions answered?
i am interested in getting a horse. i am not experienced but have rode a horse plenty of times but it has been a while. i am going to take lessons to be on the safe side. anyways how much does it cost monthly for their food and care. what kind of saddle should i buy and is a mare horse a good beginners horse.
Before you jump into purchasing a horse you have to contemplate the cost;
First, the cost of daily food which depending on the feed and the area you live in will run you about $150-$200 a month.
Then, the stable cost ~ again, depending on the area you live this could range anywhere from $50 a month into the thousands.
Then you have to set aside medical/treatment cost ~ horses have to be treated for worms, rhino etc and then there is the unexpended costs that might arise.
Then there is the cost for all your tack ~ your bits, saddle, blankets etc…
Then there is the daily maintenance ~ they have to be fed usually twice daily, brushed, watered, hove care, etc…
When I first purchased my horse ~ no one told me about the unforseen hidden cost! My monthly maintenance was about $350.00 a month on a good month.
My stable fee was $50.00mo because I was lucky and found a farmer who had a few large paddock available.
My feed which twice a day; a flake of alfalfa, dry filler, and grains cost about $5 a day.
Then the cost for driving back and forth twice a day which in my case was only 2 miles to and from over time adds up. I found my Fred and Mueller Saddle at a pawn shop and gave $350.00 for it, thank god it was in mint condition ~ and my aunt who owns her own Equine sports medicine business supplied me with all my other tack, blankets, boots, bells etc..
But even after all that ~ would I do it all over again YES!!!! The enjoyment so outweighs the cost in my books…..
