I bought a new horse about a month ago, wormed him, de-loused him, and now he seems so blah, almost sick?
I have 2 other horses, so he cant be lonely, although he is still “trying to fit in” and they are being snotty to him. He seems depressed, I’ve tried to give him supplements, he wont eat them. He gets oats every second day. As the summer nears and he sheds his winter coat he seems quite skinny too! I dont know what else to do.
he just turned 3 this month, he gets a high quality timothy/alphalpha mix(about 20lbs per day) and is turned out 24/7 so he is starting to get some nice grass.
I suspect your horse isn’t sick, but just hasn’t peaked yet. It is possible that he has spent the first three years of his life at less than optimal health and nutrition, and you won’t solve it in a month. In fact, it may take until the end of the summer before you see him improve dramatically.
I would talk to your vet about worming. If he was very wormy he might benefit from a second worming. I had a vet explain it to me like this. Encystided worms are the larva that live in a horse’s abdomen, burried into the wall. They are alive but do not come out and eat, they are basically hibernating. When you worm a horse you kill all the active worms, but in most cases you do not kill the encysted worms. All of a sudden the horse has a perfect enviroment for worms to thrive in. The encysted worms basically wake up, come out and reinfest your horse. It is possible that your horse could be as heavily wormed now as he was before you wormed him. What is the solution? If your vet advises, I would worm him again. You might be surprised to see how much he improves after a second worming.
Also, he may need to have his teeth floated, especially since he is thin. It is possible he has some dental abnormalities, or perhaps just a bunch of sharp edges that are preventing him from chewing his food as good as normal.
Now, suppliments are not a cure all, but they sure can help. If your horse is thin, he would probably benefit from eating grain once or even twice a day. My young horses spend the majority of the day out with the herd, but every evening I bring them into a seperate corral where they are given grain and extra hay. In the morning I grain them again, and then turn them all out together. By doing this I can pour some extra feed to them, and yet give them alot of socialization and excercise. Add your suppliments to the grain. You may also want to add some vegetable oil, that will give him some shine and help with weight gain. I give my young horses about 4 cups of oats in the morning with 1/2 cup vegetable oil, in the evening they get another 4 cups oats with whole flax, mineral suppliment and loose salt. My horses will eat every suppliment set before them if its mixed in yummy oats!
Is there a place you can seperate this young horse so can you feed him extra in the evenings? I have been known to make seperate corrals from corral panels if I don’t have an official corral system that will work.
If your horse remains listless and blah after a second worming, having his teeth done, and extra feed, then I would have him examined by a vet. So I would use my weight tape and check him now, give him another 30 days or so, and then go from there.
Good luck.
