Talking about horses what does this mean?
i’m buying a horse and this is some of the things the owner said:
“He has a crack in his right front hoof which the farrier cut a V into”
What does this mean?
Also
“He has had his teeth done, general checkup and been drenched”
What does the part about being drenched mean?
Drenched=dewormed.
As for the “V” depending on the crack, this is one method used to heal/get rid of a bad crack that has started in the hoof. A farrier will cut a “V” shaped notch out of the bottom of the outer hoof wall where the crack started from. It helps remove some of the pressure on that area of the hoof so that the crack does not keep getting worse. Without the notch cut in or shoes, everytime the horse walks or even puts weight on that foot with the crack, the pressure will cause the crack to keep splitting, and as the new hoof grows out the crack will continue to spread upward even into the new growth and will never grow out. With the notch cut in, the pressure is alleviated from that spot, allowing the hoof to grow while the crack does not spread and eventually the crack will grow out and the hoof will be whole again.
