Bred Heifer

how to start a show cattle business?

I live in south texas , my daughter just competed her first county fair. And she is really into show Kidd goats and want to show Kidd calves. I have around 10 acres and want to bred at least two hereford and maybe another breed, of course all heifers. Now that I heard about A.I. How can I start a business sell show cattle , remember 10 acres only , so something small . where do I start there no one i know who sell show cattle around here. please help.
when I talk about kiddie animals I mean kiddie shows since my dauther is only 7 years old. Sorry it my first year in the 4-h club.

get a spring stock show book if they have them…i know we have them in ohio. that will give you many breeders to talk to and to be able to get a good heifer at a fairly ok price. be prepared to get what you pay for though. the state fair winner here paid 23,000 for their calf last year.
you of course wouldnt pay that much because youre looking for a county fair heifer not an “all american.” go to some sales and ask questions, people will be willing to help you and some farmers might cut you a pretty big deal on heifers if you agree to promote their farm and their show calf business. if you do this then that farmer might even breed your heifers for you if you agree ot give him 1 or 2 of the offspring to sell or for herd replacement.
just jump on out there and ask questions, these big cattlemen arent as mean as they look. theyre actually nicer than most people i know

as far as a business you better be showing your calves and placing well.. for your first few years maybe even give your extra calves away to other 4Hers in exchange for promotion of your farm. this way all of your offspring of that year are being exhibited and people can see them and there is a better chance you’ll have a calf that does well. (my lambs are given to me every year from an out of county farmer who is wanting to expand his business to our county. its working very well.)

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!! i hope everything goes well and ya’;ll get to walk away with a champion title at next years fair.

head heart hands and health all the way.
