Best breed of horse for heavy set people?
My fiance wants to get into horse back riding with me. He is around 300lbs (and still losing) but I am unsure of what kind of breed to get him? I knew a heavy set person when I was younger and he rode a 17hh Appaloosa gelding. Do I look for the same (heighth wise) or do I look for a shorter stockier build?
height doesnt matter. weight and bone structure do. horses can comfortably carry 20 percent of their body weight (total… including tack) doing hard work (like showing, foxhunting, working cattle, etc..) and 30 percent for light riding. a 300 pound rider would need at least a 1250 pound horse for heavy riding. a tall narrow boned horse isnt going to be comfortable with a 300 pound load even though it may weigh 1300 pounds. you need something thick, heavy boned with a short, wide back and strong hip. also, dont buy him anything that’s narrow across the chest or extremely old. he’s going to need a younger healthy horse. my 16 hand walker carried a 325 pound man plus a roping saddle with no problems. walking horses (look for an old line foundation walker, new blood show horses are too narrow and light boned), quarter or stock type (paint, appaloosa, etc), and draft crosses are all breeds i’d look into. STAY AWAY from thoroughbreds, saddlebreds, arabians, warmbloods, standardbreds, or anything long backed and narrow boned. i’d also advise against a pureblood draft simply because they’re not built for riding and the ride is ROUGH!! many draft horses will go lame if you push them or canter them too much over time because their legs can’t take the impact from the wieght of their bodies. they’re really designed for pulling at slow speeds
