An Australian Cattle dog, with a docked tail?
I have an Red heeler puppy named Cracker Jack, 6 months old.
The Woman I got him from bought him from a breeder down in Pennsylvania, and he has papers.
He has a short tail, And I am wondering if he had it docked, or if he was born this way and not really a pure ACD; could he really be a Stumpy Tailed Cattle dog?
I know there is a lot of controversy on docking The Australian Cattle dogs tail… and you hardly EVER see a ACD with a docked tail anymore, so I am wondering.
Doesn’t really matter to me, love this little bugger either way; loves to work (:
I don’t need rude replies, just asking for your opinions out there, thanks.
Emily

Thanks Guys. And He is registered as a Australian cattle dog.
There are unfortunately many breeders out there who don’t know what the breed standard is for an ACD, including the puppy mills in Pennsylvania. Many bybs don’t know the difference, either.
The standard for an ACD includes a natural tail.
“Tail -
The set on of tail is moderately low, following the contours of the sloping croup and of length to reach approximately to the hock. At rest it should hang in a very slight curve. During movement or excitement the tail may be raised, but under no circumstances should any part of the tail be carried past a vertical line drawn through the root. The tail should carry a good brush”

The Stumpy Tailed Cattle Dog is not popular in the US yet, and not many people know the difference between them.
It is possible that the tail was broken during birth and had to be amputated. That does happen.
ETA: Just remembered one of the distinct differences. The Stumpy Tailed Cattle Dog does not have any tan on the body, anywhere. So the dog would be all blue with random black markings.
